Tenants

When I was a landlord
I would write these fantastic
letters of recommendation for
all of my tenants
for
as everyone knows
tenants, from time to time, must move on.
Writing them was like reading. There
I would sit, in my little turret, over-
looking what may once have been
a stable.
There, the qualities of
my tenants would flash
before my eyes, and
I would have to get them down
before they disappeared:
some impression of what
they had brought
during their tenancy,
some sense
of what they thought as
they moved through those corridors
as if for the first time, as
if to say: now, never again.
