JOSÉ
On the 24th of April of 1974 a military coup overthrew the long-standing dictatorial regime in Portugal. This revolution, later named The Carnation Revolution, is probably the only military coup in recent history that really opened the path to democracy, one year later. After 48 years, the dictatorship was finally over. Almost no shots were fired and only 4 people died. In a serendipitous moment, left-over carnations from a cancelled celebration, due to the coup, were offered to the passing soldiers who placed them in the muzzles of their guns. The go-ahead for the coup was given by two songs played on the radio 2 hours apart. A few years ago I did this film with images that I do not own to celebrate another anniversary of the revolution. A mix of pre, during and post revolution images, with its main protagonists. It was part of a DJ set, in this case a VJ set, hence no sound.
