Horse of the Wild
Horse of the wild was caught and was tamed
Stabled and harnessed, rodeo trained
Bucked off the riders, trampled the clowns
Broke through the fence, rode into town
Kicked up her dust, on prisons and gates
Was dust on the banks to agitate the state
Roped in a corner, guarded by sheep
Shot by a dart that put her to sleep
And government teachers, government schools
Taught her to plow and bow to the rules
She worked in the fields, the fields of the state
Broken and meek, conceding to fate
Tangled in vision, rotten in teeth
Sick on the insides and sore underneath
So old, in an auction, with bridle and rein
Brought home in a wagon for somebody’s gain
Forced on display, still noble and sure
But then she was his and no longer hers
She rolled on her side, folded her knees
This horse of the wild has caught a disease
Died in a stable, indented in hay
Removed in the morning, divided and flayed
Not for the mane, not for the tail
Sold for the flesh, bought at a sale
